Virgin Atlantic To Hire Additional Staff

June 27, 2005

Richard Branson' s Virgin Atlantic Airways said on Monday it planned to recruit 1,500 staff over the next 18 months as part of previously flagged expansion plans.
Virgin Atlantic, which increased its fuel surcharges on tickets last week due to high oil prices, said in a statement it planned to create 1,000 new positions, while 500 would be part of natural staff turnover.
The recruitment drive was part of plans announced last year to create 6,000 new jobs in the long term as it doubles its fleet size and flies new routes (starting to fly to Cuba next September). The airline currently employs 8,500 staff. Virgin's larger rival British Airways employs 46,000 staff.
The announcement was in contrast to last week's move to raise the surcharge on tickets sold and issued in Britain by GBP&8 (USD$14,6) per flight. British Airways also said it would increase its surcharges.
Virgin Atlantic is 51 percent owned by Branson' s Virgin Group and 49 percent owned by Singapore Airlines.
Virgin Atlantic has been expanding with new routes to Australia, China, North America, India, Cuba and the Caribbean. It will launch new routes to Dubai and Jamaica in 2006.
The airline ordered USD$5.5 billion in new jets last year. Seven new aircraft will enter service by the end of 2006, bringing its total number of planes to 39.
The company said in a statement it expected to hire up to 1,100 cabin crew and 150 flight deck and new engineering positions. Around 100 extra staff would be employed at its headquarters.
